Section 8 Rental Assistance Program

The Madison Housing & Redevelopment Commission administers Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers to 111 families in all of Lake and Miner County. The vouchers are funded through the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). The first step for a family is to obtain and complete an application. You can obtain a copy of the application in the following ways:

If you are currently a voucher holder in another area, please email Brenda Strom  at bstrom@profmgtinc.com  to inquire about portability.

Once the application is received, occupancy staff will review the application and send any necessary verifications. This process takes approximately 10 to 14 days. Once the verifications are received, a member of the staff will notify you regarding the status of your application.

Once your application has been accepted, you will be placed on the waiting list. The waiting list gives preferences to families, handicapped, disabled, and/or elderly. When there is assistance available, staff will notify you that you are expected to come to the office to have your voucher issued to you.

Once you have been issued a voucher, you will then have 60 days to get "leased-up." To be considered leased-up, you must find a place to live that meets the criteria, have that unit pass inspection, and have all the appropriate paperwork complete on or before the 15th of the month. An example of this would be if a tenant wants to have rental assistance in place for the 1st day of October, everything must be done by the 15th of September. If the necessary items are not complete, rental assistance will not be awarded.

A family may lose their rental assistance if they do not comply with the lease and the rules of the program.
